Diabetes Anonymous, or Diab Anon, is the brainchild of Stephen Taylor. Stephen, one of the owners of WebWand, was diagnosed with Type II diabetes in early 2002. During the three years since his diagnosis, he has spent much of the time steadfastly ignoring his condition. Suffering from a classic case of denial, Stephen was rather shocked to find that his blood sugar level had spiraled out of control. In fear for his long term health, he decided to start to control his condition and to create an online community for fellow sufferers - "My name is Stephen and I'm a diabetic". The site has a basic but appealing design and has all the usual facilities found in a community site:
"The idea for this site came to me in the middle of the night. This is the time I when I worry most about my condition. It's a pity really because it's the one time that I'm not likely to be eating the wrong type of food. I felt that I had to admit that I had diabetes and that there is no such thing as a slight case. The idea is to provide a forum for people to complain about their ailment and to have a good moan. I want the site to attract people with a sense of humor so that we can keep each other cheerful. I hope people will like the site." Diab Anon was launched on 1 December 2004 on a not-for-profit basis. Visit the Diabetes Anonymous site. |
